Sound Techs: Listen up!
You Are The Weakest Link In Your Sound System
You can spend a lot of money on gear, but if you don't run it properly, it just won't sound right.
But when you understand the equipment, the music, and how to be a great team player, great audio can make your congregation feel welcome and help them engage with worship.
But a bad mix makes it difficult to engage with worship, hard to understand the teaching, and worst of all, people aren't thinking about Jesus.
You're also the hero
When no one else stepped in to help, you were there whether or not you got all the training and skills you need to make it happen.
But unless you want to keep running into the same problems, some things are going to have to change.
Here's the thing about investing in sound training:
Confidence comes with skill
When you master the sound system, it changes how you feel about yourself.
But how do you get the sound skills that make you confident?
You could spend $200/week to bring in a professional for you to shadow. But that get expensive, and a lot of pros get great results... but aren’t necessarily good teachers.
You could go to a trade school. But you probably don’t have $80,000 lying around for that. And those programs aren’t even geared toward church sound techs anyway.

Here's what others are saying about Worship Sound Wisdom University:
The material that I’ve learned through the Worship Sound Wisdom Broadcast Mixing course has been exceedingly practical, and everything I’ve implemented from it has made a noticeable difference.
I especially appreciate James’ emphasis on the spiritual dimension of what we are doing, and his encouraging way of presenting things.
- Cliff, St. Petersburg, Florida
I’ve actually teared up watching my church worship knowing that a mix I created helped get them there, and the sound wasn’t a distraction.
James is extremely helpful, and you’ll feel like he’s not only a teacher, but a trusted partner with your church that is invested in improving the worship experience. He always goes above and beyond with help, advice, and feedback.
- Gibran Braithwaite, Vancouver, WA
How do I know you're really qualified to teach this stuff?
My name is James Attaway, and I've been a part of church worship teams for over 20 years. I played guitar and bass in the youth worship team in high school, leading worship, writing chord charts, and arranging the band. In college, I got hooked on running sound. It was so fun to shape the arrangement and help everyone sound their best.
I got my degree in Music Business from Belmont University in Nashville, where I learned from some of the best in the audio industry.
After graduating, I joined staff at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City as a prayer missionary. I had the privilege of serving in the 24/7 worship environment, where worship teams play around the clock, 365 days a year.
When missionaries pray for 4-6 hours a day (or more), and the sound is bad, it can make prayer miserable. So I started a sound training program through the ministry school to train sound techs for making prayer and worship enjoyable.
When I wasn't training in the classroom, I would coach sound techs during their worship sets (kind of selfishly... so my own prayer time could be more pleasant).
Over the 12 years that I served there, good-sounding sets went from rare to typical. Now it's uncommon for things to sound bad.
Now I'm training church sound teams just like yours all over the world, helping them learn the principles and techniques that eliminate distractions and make worship sound enjoyable.
Can you tell me more about what courses I get with Worship Sound Wisdom University?

- How to run wireless gear without problems. (Dropouts will be a distant memory.)
401 - Train the Trainer - NEW Course!
- How to recruit new sound techs, and train them quickly and effectively so you can have a break from doing it all yourself.
- The three areas you need to focus on for training a team that's healthy and hits the mark.
- The one requirement that's non-negotiable for any member of the sound team
- The three technical skills church sound techs need to master to get a great mix every week.
- Exercises for developing your mixer's musical ear, even if they're nerd through and through.
Why does all of this matter?
You have to connect your training and skill to your church’s mission.
That’s going to be different for each church.
If your goal is to grow the church by making people feel welcomed and connected
so they can get healing and wholeness, you and the worship team work together to create an environment where people can focus on the lyrics and the music, and how that truth applies to their lives.
If your church’s goal is to serve a multi-generational or multi-cultural congregation,
then you have a fine line to walk between “enough energy” and “not too loud,” among other things that require the skill to serve the congregation.
If your ministry's goal is to let people encounter Jesus in extended times of worship and prayer,
where the people can "soak" in God's presence, I can tell you from experience that bad sound is a SERIOUS pain point for those who want to stay a long time.
No matter your church's mission and vision, serving is more fun when you're confident and you crush it.
