Pastors, Worship Leaders & Sound Techs: Listen up!

The Sound Tech is the Weakest Link In Your Sound System

You can spend a lot of money on gear, but if the sound tech doesn't run it properly, it just won't sound right.

But when your sound tech understands the equipment, the music, and how to be a great team player, great audio can make your congregation feel welcome and help them engage with worship.

But a bad mix makes it difficult to engage with worship, hard to understand the teaching, and worst of all, people aren't thinking about Jesus.

It's not the sound tech's fault

They're the hero rushing in to help, whether or not they have all the training and skills they need to make it happen.

But unless you want to keep running into the same problems, some things are going to have to change.

Placeholder Image

The first change is the mindset of the leadership team:

Sound is a crucial part of pointing people to Jesus in our gatherings, not just a position to fill with a warm body.

Placeholder Image

The second change is belief about where quality comes from.

The sound tech makes a bigger difference than the equipment. With advances in technology, even a modest sound system can perform well with a well-trained sound tech.

The third change is to take action and invest in your sound team

Because sound at church is not a low-skill position anymore, it takes time and training to get great results.

Here's the thing about investing in sound training: Skills Multiply

The knowledge gained by one sound tech can be passed to another, and another, and another.

While gear gets broken and worn out, sound skills last and grow.

But how do you get training for your church sound team?

You could spend $200/week to bring in a professional for your team to shadow. But that get expensive, and a lot of pros get great results... but aren’t necessarily good teachers.

You could send a team member to a trade school. But you probably don’t have $80,000 lying around for that. And those programs aren’t even geared toward church sound techs anyway.

The material that I’ve learned through the Worship Sound Wisdom Broadcast Mixing course has been exceedingly practical, and everything I’ve implemented from it has made a noticeable difference.

I especially appreciate James’ emphasis on the spiritual dimension of what we are doing, and his encouraging way of presenting things.

I’ve actually teared up watching my church worship knowing that a mix I created helped get them there, and the sound wasn’t a distraction.

James is extremely helpful, and you’ll feel like he’s not only a teacher, but a trusted partner with your church that is invested in improving the worship experience. He always goes above and beyond with help, advice, and feedback.

How do I know you're really qualified to teach this stuff?

My name is James Attaway, and I've been a part of church worship teams for over 20 years. I played guitar and bass in the youth worship team in high school, leading worship, writing chord charts, and arranging the band. In college, I got hooked on running sound. It was so fun to shape the arrangement and help everyone sound their best.

I got my degree in Music Business from Belmont University in Nashville, where I learned from some of the best in the audio industry.

After graduating, I joined staff at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City as a prayer missionary. I had the privilege of serving in the 24/7 worship environment, where worship teams play around the clock, 365 days a year.

When missionaries pray for 4-6 hours a day (or more), and the sound is bad, it can make prayer miserable. So I started a sound training program through the ministry school to train sound techs for making prayer and worship enjoyable

When I wasn't training in the classroom, I would coach sound techs during their worship sets (kind of selfishly... so my own prayer time could be more pleasant).

Over the 12 years that I served there, good-sounding sets went from rare to typical. Now it's uncommon for things to sound bad.

Now I'm training church sound teams just like yours all over the world, helping them learn the principles and techniques that eliminate distractions and make worship sound enjoyable.

What if my pastor says this program costs too much?

First, count the number microphones and direct boxes you have on stage (the little box you plug a guitar into and the mic cable comes out the other side).

Find 8 mics and DIs and show them to your worship leader. Those probably cost as much as this course. And that doesn’t even include the mic cables and mic stands, the your sound board, monitoring system or the speakers.

So if your church is willing to spend thousands of dollars on a sound system...

a few hundred dollars on training the people that run it is tiny in comparison.

(Or a “drop in the bucket” if you want to use quote Isaiah 40:15.)

Sound at church isn’t a low-skill position anymore. The gear is much more capable in the right hands, and just a little training can make a big difference in how it sounds.

Sound at church isn’t a simple task anymore. The complexity of running sound for the in-person service, the live broadcast, or both at the same time has raised the bar of training that’s required for your team.

Both my worship pastor and lead pastor noticed how I was able to solve issues with our EQ settings both at FOH and the live broadcast mix since taking this course.

  • How to run wireless gear without problems. (Dropouts will be a distant memory.)
  • 401 - Train the Trainer - NEW Course!

    • How to recruit new sound techs, and train them quickly and effectively so you can have a break from doing it all yourself.
    • The three areas you need to focus on for training a team that's healthy and hits the mark.
    • The one requirement that's non-negotiable for any member of the sound team
    • The three technical skills church sound techs need to master to get a great mix every week.
    • Exercises for developing your mixer's musical ear, even if they're nerd through and through.

You might be asking, "How are we going to pay for this?"

The church can pay for it. If you’re not in charge of purchasing decisions, you’ll have to show someone that it’s a worthy investment to sow into the skills of the sound team. More on that below.

You could find a partner in the church to pay for it. Some people have the heart and the resources to invest above their normal giving, and every single person who comes to church is affected by the sound. Maybe you need to start praying for the right person to ask, and step out in faith to see if they would like to sow into the sound team.

You could invest in yourself (or team up with some friends). You’re more likely to USE the training when you have some skin in the game. And you know what? The joy you get from really knowing how to serve with excellence is totally worth the price you pay for the training.

Guitar players, drummers, piano players, singers, most of them paid for lessons at some point in their worship team "career."

Before, there wasn’t an opportunity to learn your craft without sweeping a sound shop or getting on a tour bus. Now you’ve got the opportunity to take lessons on the sound board, do it with your friends at church, and feel the exhilaration of crafting a mix that helps people engage with worship.

How do you propose your church invests in your sound team?

You have to connect your training investment to the church’s mission.

That’s going to be different for each church.

If your goal is to grow the church by making people feel welcomed and connected

so they can get healing and wholeness, you have to paint the picture that the sound team works together with the worship team to create a welcoming environment where people can focus on the lyrics and the music, and how that truth applies to their lives.

If your church’s goal is to serve a multi-generational or multi-cultural congregation,

then you have a fine line to walk between “enough energy” and “not too loud,” among other things that require the skill to serve the congregation. If you can highlight to your leadership team how you feel stuck and want help getting unstuck so you can serve better, you’re likely to win their support.

If your ministry's goal is to let people encounter Jesus in extended times of worship and prayer,

where the people can "soak" in God's presence, I can tell you from experience that bad sound is a SERIOUS pain point for those who want to stay a long time. Everyone in the ministry wins when the sound is enjoyable.

Whatever the goal of your church's mission and vision, when your leaders see that you're committed to the church and its vision, and you're wanting to bring your best to Jesus when you serve, they're much more likely to invest in you and the rest of your team.
